standing on a solitary mesa, the lonely world before you.
the sun blazing on your neck,
the wind smelling of sage.
what do you see, what do you want?
what little difference can you make,
an insignificant speck upon this aged place.
day two we finished our objective of driving on US40 for the length of colorado. exciting eh? the part i liked most about that particular part of the trip was right at the very end. a dozen miles or so from the utah border we came across the southern entrance to dinosaur natnl monument park or something like that. the road was closed about five miles in, but we went that far. the road ended up on top of a mesa. we were up at about 7000' MSL, the air was dry, barely above freezing, withthe sun shining. we were the only ones there. it's a cool feeling to know that likely as not, we were the only two people within a three to five mile radius. it was exhilerating.
north easterrn utah we came through ashley natnl forest. i think it was one of the prettiest places we saw on the trip. k has a good point that we'd just finished crossing western colorado which is nothing but sagebrush, so the comparison was drastic. we covered a lot of ground that day. from denver to just south of jackson, wyoming, which is south of yellowstone. southern wyoming was not ugly per se, but five hours of it at the end of the day was exhuasting. k and i both slept very well that night. actually, i had been sick leaving denver, headache, nose problems, feeling feverish, i wasn't real impressed with my prospects. but some good hard prayer and eight hours of sleep later and i was feeling much better. i fought a runny nose for two more days, but God was helping me out there a good bit.
he picked a nice spot for us to stay too. we took the first motel we came across and she had one room left. she only had one because her son was on spring break from embry riddle (our aviation competitors) with a bunch of friends. such interesting events.. i'm not inclined to believe in coincidences anyway. our room was nice, albeit lacking a phone. so k and i took off across the street to use the payphone at a gas station. there were two so i called dad while he called our next night's stop. i just finsished my call when something odd happend. k was wearing his hat and duster, he's got a western streak much stronger than mine. all of a sudden one of those little jeep copies (ztrak or something like that) comes zooming across the intersection, into the gas station parking lot (the station was closed for the evening btw), right up to within 20 ft of kyle. a girl inside, (she looked to be young) peered forward at k who was transfixed in the headlights for a few seconds, then backed up, turned around, and took back off the same direction she'd came back into the darkness. k ignored the whole thing, he didn't even turn around. i was at a loss. it was definately the singular most odd event of the day. she had orgeon plates too, so it doesnt' seem like she was lookign for someone. add it to the "ask God when i get to heaven" list
