a story one of my instructors shared with me:he was instructing a private student in a small single engine piper (eg, an arrow or warrior). it was one of the student's first times around the traffic pattern. a piper of this type has manual flaps, operated by a handle/lever on the floor between the seats, looking much like an emergency brake in a car. part of the the procedure is to lower the flaps just before or during the turn to final. so my instructor and this student are on left base, nearing final. the student stomps left rudder, drops the flaps, releases left rudder, all while commencing his left turn to final. my instructor looks at him and asks, "you have a car?"
"yeah...?"
"what kind is it?"
"ford mustang."
"automatic or manual?"
the student, trying to concentrate on landing wheel side down, was beginning to get confused.
"manual.. why?"
i guess you had to be there. one of the perks of teaching you could say.
