it was from my highschool biology teacher that i first heard the expression "involuntary reaction of the diaphragm." m-w.com calls it "a spasmodic inhalation with closure of the glottis accompanied by a peculiar sound." personally i like the calvin and hobbes cartoon.calvin has the hiccups, and we're talking bad.
hobbes says, "try a spoonfull of sugar, that might help"
calvin acquiesces, trying one.. silence.
hobbes well???
calvin hic! it didn't work ... better try another :)
hobbes then goes on to convince calvin to try drinking a glass of water from the opposite side of the glass ...which i must say was quite funny to watch.
