Song of Songsi don't have a whole lot to say on this particular book, but i will say a few things. one, i don't like the idea of it being written by solomon, anymore than i like the idea of ecclesiastes being written by him. in my opinion, solomon's a wuss. he can't light a candle to his father. sure, he was a wiseguy, but he was also an idiot. my study bible tries to imply that he wrote ecclesiastes at the end of his life, that he "returned to God." reading 1kings 11, i don't buy it. as a result, the idea of solomon writing ecc and ss is repulsive. the choices he made return to haunt and taint his works. but if he didn't write them, the taint is not there. see my philosophy? i'd rather the books to be written by someone a little more pure, even if they're not "as wise." two, a random observation, song of songs doesn't jive well with the concept of arranged marriages. three, i appreciate ss (if for nothing else) becuase of its expanded vocabulary. correct me if i'm wrong, but i've heard the NIV was translated on an eighth grade level. i agree wholeheartedly with that choice, better easier to read than harder. i'd rather not have a prospective christian discouraged by the bible simply because they couldn't understand half the words. but it was nice to see a few words in ss that don't appear in the rest of the bible.. the translators were probably scrambling for a while there. i'm not really talking about four syllable words, but just the shear volume of adjectives and nouns in this book.. there's a lot of variety. it helps allieve the normal impression i recieve from the NIV of cold sterility.
