a couple sundays ago i decided to attend an anglican church. this is mostly because all the protestant churches i know of don't start til ten thirty and don't let out til after one. jesse ryan and i were wanting to get up the road at a reasonable time, so we went with the anglican. it's an oldish church (est 1664, St. Andrew), but well populated by the wealthier end of the Jamaican economic spectrom. we spent most of our time trying to figure out where we were in the liturgy, and then trying to hear what words we were supposed to sing as the organ drowned out the choir.after church i met a "celebrity". not too difficult accomplish on an island of merely three million. actually, celebrity is probably a bit strongish as words go, but a radio personality would fit better. he does a lot of the radio spots for KLAS sports radio (one of three stations that i can recieve on my japanese manufactured radio), as well as announcing for the local horse races. that excitement over, we webt home.
after a quick change of clothing at their house (except for jesse, he opted to wear his sunday best on a trip to the country), we headed up to annoto bay. three or so weeks before, jesse had spent his required/priveleged "week in the country" with a family that ron and gus know up on the n coast. this sunday marked the end of lisa's week, so we overlapped her by about three hours before ron came to give her a ride back to mobay. i wish i could give you the family's names, but surprise surprise i've forgotten them. i'm not even sure i got Lisa's name right. if mcc had a decent website i'd tell you, but they're being obscure as ever.
our first activity, after jesse was successfully reunited with the family (who were very happy to see him), was to jump the neighbor's fence and admire the view. here, btw, is their youngest of two daughters, and the source of a fair amount of entertainment. the view consisted of the water to the north (they're about eight miles from the coast), a glimpse of annoto bay twelve miles east, and a good view of the western arm of the grand ridge of the blue mountains. i climbed a tree to take a picture of some blossoms, tried to climb a coconut tree (lost a fair amount of skin doing it too), and in general had a good time. jumped in the deep end by joining a game of dominos with jesse, ryan, and "papa" (the girls' maternal grandfather). having never played official dominoes before, it was an interesting 15 minutes to start off with, but by the end of the second hour i found it a wee bit tiresome.
we came back to kingston sometime in the mid-afternoon and proceded to their place for icecream. existence here is quite rough....
