The seventh day.As best I can calculate, being the twenty-first day of March, 2005. A Monday.
turns out we're leaving at five thirty, not six, good thing i got mostly packed before hitting the hay. we stood out on the concrete dock by the new church until our launch showed up. once loaded (we sat scattered amongst other passengers as the launch was at 90% capacity when we loaded. eventually we loaded up to about 110%, must have been a slow morning, but i was glad to have my own seat--it could have gotten a lot fuller). once loaded, we moved up and down the lagoon picking up random passengers. after 15 to 20 minutes or so, we set across the main lagoon..headed inland for the 35 minute trip to pto lempira.
lempira was the airport we stopped at enroute to ahaus a couple days earlier, this time we showed up at the dock. discovering our hotel not yet open, we hauled our gear a couple blocks to a breakfast joint gdad knew about. this entire day was to be a liesurly one. we had few objectives:
eat breakfast
eat lunch
eat supper
get a hotel
meet ron and lauren
meet fransisco
arrange a ride to leimus
and some secondary objectives:
get emmigrated
get some money
and if you were jerrel, find an interet cafe to email your SO.
well, we managed to eat breakfast. by the time we got back to the hotel it was pushing 0830 and life was finally stirring. we got a room, admired the black and white lepoard print sheets, the defunct ceiling fan (with blades describing ten inches of droop at the blade ends--humidity had not been kind...), ditched our gear, and headed in search of a ride. that arranged (oh-so-dark thirty the next morning), we wandered on out to ron and laurens. texas aggies both, they own a house littered from kitchen to porch with power tools and accesories. he's in the business of trying to help local businesses and individuals better their business. both in practices and in choice of profession.
we sat and talked with them for twenty minutes or so. he knew where fransisco (a some-time well driller) had moved to since gdad was here last and offered to walk us over there. his wife was home, so we left a message with her and went back to ron's house. from there we continued to main street, lost jerrel in the vincinity of an internet cafe, and went to visit Mau (pronounced Mow). he owns a shop/residence and speaks english. gdad ran into him last year somehow.
we went back in search of jerrel. the internet cafe was in a small room, five computers, four fans on high, the blinds closed, and the ambient temp well into the nineties. i sat on a chair against the wall and was out like a light. we tried to hit a bank on teh way back to the motel, but they'd had the bright idea of closing for holy week. we lazed around the hotel for a couple hours then tried to get emmigrated. oddly enough, the migracion office was closed.
our driver for the morrow showed up at some point to change the departure time from 0700 to 0500, at which point gdad broached the immigration issue with him (we weren't sure the office in leimus would be open). our driver "knew somebody that knew somebody" (actually, he knew the immigration officer personally and lived a couple houses down from him). just as we were headed out for supper, he showed up again and gave us a ride over there. we got our passports stamped in the officer's living room, then walked back to the hotel for supper.
fransisco showed up after supper, and gdad talked to him for some time.
