"today was a turning point in my life..."i got a haircut.
it wasn't very traumatic (read: no blood lost).
for background reading; i'd suggest the chapter from james herriot regarding barber chairs, tomatoes, and flying dogs (if that doesn't ring a bell, then nevermind).
for posterity, i have pictures:
Before
Afterunfortunately, describing my barber as "competent" would probably not be within the realm of truth. although he did indeed remove a large quantity of hair from my head, he dumped most of it down my shirt. this necessitated a shower, where i discovered a large black and blue bruise on my right hip. how that got there i had no idea--until closer inspection revealed no soreness and small amount of grease. this quite clearly would be a result of yesterday's experiences, which were... well, greasy.
first i had to clean the office/shop. while i was gone it managed to pile up higher than i left it, though i hadn't thought that possible. i cleaned the place up just so i could find the tools i needed to change the FCU (the thing that was broke). found them, managed to change the FCU in record time (ie, i broke the record for taking the longest), and took it on a test flight. by that time it was dark. so i lit out of there with the lightest take-off i've ever done in a kingair (i only had 1:45 fuel on board). at 14000 i was still doing 1500fpm in the climb. that was pretty cool (guys tend to like high-performance toys). i set up for cruise and held it for about five minutes until i was satisfied that everything was hunky-dory. then i decided it was time to go home since i'd neglected to bring an oxygen tube with me. this involved a somewhat steep descent profile (2200+fpm) with the city plastered square in the middle of the windscreen. that is, i had front row seats to a nice static light show. kingston doesn't look so bad at night from a mile above =). i'da took a picture for you, but a kingair in max descent with the gear and approach flaps out has a tendency to vibrate. you know, just a little.
had an interesting discussion the other day regarding charcoal grills. at somepoint we got into an argument over the differences between small 55 gallon drums and large 55 gallon drums before deciding to just shut up and eat our chicken.
along the same lines, a story i read about an immigrant trying to learn english had the immigrant saying this: "Avery mornink she got up six o'clock, no matter vat time it vas!"
observaciones de mexico:
- "couple" is a permanent state. "single" is merely a transient state (and very rare).
- cities here actually have people in them. and sidewalks for said people to walk on.
- sunday evening is not the best time to "pop into the mercado real quick for some groceries". i saw people literally waiting in line to go down the cereal isle (which, incidentally, happens to be the same isle the milk is in. hi-ho what will they think of next! not even walmart's that advanced.)
- pda is apparently an art form here.
- i saw three pregnent women in 30 minutes at the mall. i'm not sure i've ever seen a pregnant jamaican woman in 13 months. but then jamaica doesn't exactly have any malls either.
- i had a lot of little kids stare at me. guess it's time to find a new barber.
whoa. interesante. go to google.com, type in "failure" and click "i'm feeling lucky". interesante, no?
this is a fun little read (two minutes) from taleswapper.
i came across a term in the news that i'd never heard before a couple weeks ago. "donor fatigue" to see an example search for it in google or news.google. everywhere it's still in quotes, give us a few more disasters and it'll be a full-blown buzzword w/o quotes. of course, it'll still take 25 years to get into webster's. meanwhile running through the back of mind... and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes... i'm not preaching the end times by anymeans, but i get tired of people bemoaning something i knew was coming. just like having classmates whine and complain about a test that's "too hard", "too short of notice", "that they're not ready for" when it's been in the syllabus from day one.
my apologies if you were one of those classmates, i didn't mean you, just the others.
my, arn't i in a companionable mood tonight? : )
let's switch to morbid for moment and consider a less fortunate brother and sister 5 Mennonite siblings die in Wash. crash (seattlepi.com) aiyiyi.
another brother that needs continued prayer: Chinese church leader sentenced (cnn.com).
don't know where i picked this up (Jenn maybe?): There is a fine line between sanity and insanity: I am just trying to stay on the side that has the refrigerator.
and i definately culled this one from Jenn (i think :) ): The work week may be 40 hrs, but the weekend is 48. --Busch beer commercial
vocabulary word of the day is colorable (m-w.com). (got that one from Matthew Henry's Commentary on Gen 29:15-30 (point four, if you use Ctrl-F it's spelled "colourable").
