<< Sarcasm Scale >>

An explanation...

[0] = drop dead serious

[1] = no sarcasm, take it at face value

[2] = light banter

[3] = sarcastic, but still in a good mood

[4] = very sarcastic, almost enough to make you take a step back and say, "whoa"

[5] = very sarcastic, perhaps a skosh overboard [3] (and typically it means I'm upset)

believe it or not, the ministry of agriculture neglected to pay their phone bill for a month or two.  by a sad twist of fate, our company phone is on their bill.  so the ministry finally got around to paying it last week, but Cable & Wireless hasn't yet gotten around to reconnecting our phone line (and corresponding ADSL service).  soon come.

so i've read two books, am over halfway through two others, watched a couple movies (including The Sting, highly recommend), went to mexico, washed my laundry (one load in mexico, the other in jamaica), went grocery shopping (don't ask, none of it's healthy), made my first four pots of coffee (the first was undrinkable), watched a thunderstorm, and in general had a good time.  didn't write a word.

then on my way into work this morning i dropped in on my landlord to pay the rent for this month (I was only 12 days late).  he welcomes me in, then turns and asks if i'd known that his wife died on Monday (two days ago).

well, that explains why their maid was crying on the front steps.  my brain goes into that high gear where it tries desperately to think of something appropriate while nothing comes to mind.  she'd gone for some tests 17 August, found out she had cancer, and died 25 days later.  i spent my five minutes while he was writing out the reciept thinking about the hope that I have and that he doesn't...but I did not say a single word about that hope to a man who is wandering around his kitchen saying "what can you do?  these things just happen.  you're a pilot, you know that".  how do i relate to a man twice my age, and why can't I just open my mouth and let the Holy Spirit speak?

Other than some rather dark thoughts about death on my way down the hill, my day is passing pleasantly by.  The time has come to leave Rick's apartment (with it's corresponding internet access) and continue to work where I'll need to come up with something to occupy my time.  maybe i'll finally get around to troubleshooting that camera system which failed on our dispersal machine some months ago.  or i could organize our hardware collection, we've got bolts and screws scattered hither and yon.  i'm the only one who knows where half of it is, if Rick or Paul need something specific they have to hope I'm around to find it for them.  it's nice to know one's needed...
