this past weekend i got together with some friends from jamaica. in texas. my apologies to the friends i have in texas that i didn't stop to see but unfortunately there are only so many days in a week. (that and you live in texas. it's huge). i did stop by campus on the way down to houston. five o'clock in the morning in late may the place was deserted. a couple new buildings, some other changes here and there, but still pretty much the same. i opened the car door and it even smelled the same (i think it's all the pine trees). i dropped by msc1 to use the restroom and played plankeye's "goodbye" on the jukebox for old time's sake and scaled the berm. i was on campus for a grand total of eight or nine minutes, ran three stop signs, and was above speed limit the entire time—after all i've already got the paper, campus security can't revoke my diploma after i've already gotten it (i hope).the most dramatic change was actually south of town on the way to the airport. a new walmart. it was only about eight years too late to be any good to me (not that i like walmart anyway). but think of the convenience! right on my way back from the airport, no more 20 minute trips to the north side of town for a walmart run. it wasn't like we had anything better to do than spend an hour going to walmart, but still...
the weekend itself was spent at a lake house on lake conroe just north of houston. we indulged in quite a few vacationious actvities—some familiar ones from jamaica but also some distinctly american ones as well; swimming, tubing, waterskiing, tubing, jetskiing, hiking, frisbee, pool, puzzling, rook, and lots and lots of eating. this was my first time successfully waterskiing and i must confess it was a lot of fun, although between that and tubing and sitting in a car for 20+ hours on the drive home it's left me feeling somewhat stiff. somehow i also managed to avoid any sunburn or serious injury, though not for lack of trying on the jetski. saturday we ran down to houston to visit the space center and take the tour. it was very interesting, but the highlight of the trip was being in the car with three girls and an ace of base cd. that's pretty hard to top for excitement.
on the way home i dropped by the great smoky mountains for a quick tour. ver' nice, i'm recommending further study of the area to myself. after detouring a bit to give some hitchhikers (ATers) a ride, i dropped in on my aunt and uncle's for supper (kaitlin was there too) and after a nice visit moseyed on home. roughly 3000 miles, six days, and a top speed of 118mph (east texas has some nice straight stretches).
